The 2012 WHL Bantam Draft: How Did Victoria Do?

Welcome to Part Two of our series on the Victoria Royals and their short WHL Bantam Draft history. In the first part, we saw how Victoria left a lot of players on the table who turned out to be studs but is that also true for the 2012 draft that gave Royals’ fans Tyler Soy and Chaz Reddekopp?

A RECAP:

10 Picks
4 Defense
1 Goaltender
5 Forwards

4 WHL Players (over 100 games)
2 NHL Draft Picks (Soy/Reddekopp)

The 2011 Draft seemed to be a little deeper than this one, but Royals GM Marc Habscheid made a lot of good decisions, with his first five picks, and six of the first seven played at least 20 games in the WHL. There were a few better choices out there and he did strike out with his last three picks, which are very important for the long-term success of a Western Hockey League team.

Overall, the Royals added two future NHL Draft Picks and another player, Nagy, who could find himself playing professionally somewhere once his WHL career is over. Getting success with their high picks is important, but it is finding those late gems, like a Jesse Gabrielle or a Patrick Bajkov, that is crucial to a team who want to be perennial title threats. Is the fact that Victoria struck out with 70% of their picks in the 2012 Draft the reason why they haven’t been able to get past the second round of the WHL Playoffs?

  1. Hey man – like that anylysis but a mistake. That GM Hope didn’t even get to Victoria until start of 12-13, so he never had a draft til 2013.
