The Victoria Royals Draft History: The 2014 Edition

We have chronicled 2011 through 2013 in previous editions of the series, and now for the last one. 2014 is the final draft year that we can really judge since the players in the 2015 and 2016 drafts haven’t played enough at this point in their careers.

A RECAP:

9 Picks (4 Defense, 4 Forwards, 1 Goalie)

4 WHL Players over 40GP + 1 WHL Backup Goalie

The 2014 Draft was a solid three years ago but this draft hasn’t produced the talent that the last few drafts had seen, especially in the later rounds. Scott Walford and Ryan Peckford seem to be good bets for the 2017 NHL Draft, perhaps in the later rounds like Tyler Soy and Chaz Reddekopp. Guys like Ben Berard and Dawson Frank could still play in the WHL before their eligibility is up, but the leagues they are in (the BCHL and the VIJHL, respectively) are feeder leagues for NCAA teams, not Major Junior.

The good news for the Royals is that it seems like the draft was weak all the way around. There haven’t been many gems who have appeared in the later rounds, so there really wasn’t much that GM Cameron Hope could have done.
